BIG BANG TO BIG DATA

RDM - Expert Workshop on synergies between NFDI, ErUM-Data and Helmholtz-DMA

On March 13 and 14, 2023, the second "Research Data Management Expert Workshop” on synergies between NFDI, ErUM-Data, Helmholtz-DMA, Helmhotlz HMC and three of the applicant teams to the German Competence Centers BMBF-call took place at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn. In addition to the scientific exchange between the different initiatives, the workshop had the particular goal of developing strategies for working on common topics and planning next steps.

On the first day, the focus was on collaborative exchange on the activities and plans of the different initiatives. Michael Kramer (MPIfR, B3D) opened the program talking about the new challenges and opportunities for handling Big Data in astrophysics. The opening was followed by key note speeches and a panel of experts where each initiative was represented. The session concluded with the presentations of success stories from infrastructure facilities.

The second day of the workshop was opened by Dr. Michael Janßen from the MPIfR with the presentation "The Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration: imaging of black holes". Afterwards, the participants had the opportunity to work in working groups on one of the following topics selected by the participants: Communication and training, Sustainability and transfer, Interoperability and metadata, Research Software.

The results were presented in the plenum and discussed in a lively manner. The summary of the two workshop days and the outlook were followed by a get-together, which the participants used to continue their discussions and exchange ideas on common topics.
